Welcome to top-performing Selby College, the No.1 local Sixth Form

With A Level results placing Selby College consistently in the top 10% of colleges in England, your local Sixth Form has an excellent reputation for student success.

Every year, students at Selby College gain places at some of Britain’s best universities including Oxford and Cambridge. Our success is based on four key factors, we have a very successful Gifted & Talented programme designed to help learners strive for top university places. We also choose our range of A Levels wisely, to ensure they are in subjects Russell Group universities want. We have a state-of-the-art campus that is second to none locally, packed full of the latest technology that will help you with your studies, preparing you for university and your eventual career. If you need any further help or assistance, we provide excellent Careers and Next Steps support. We have a team of qualified Careers Advice and Guidance staff who are trained to talk you through the different ideas you might have about what you want to study and to help you decide which courses to take. We also have great links with universities and employers, so can plan out your progression routes beyond college.

The most important thing for you to do now is to look at which A Levels you would like to study at Selby College, then come to one of our Open Events. We have a special A Level Open Morning on Saturday 21st October 2017, with staff and students available to talk to you in more depth about your course choice and how we can progress your application, so you secure your place at one of England’s top-performing colleges. If you cannot attend this event, please come to any of our Open Events, as there will be staff available to advise you further.

  • What Makes Us Different

    Selby College officially became Yorkshire's first Ofsted Graded "Outstanding College" in October 2007, one of only 11 colleges in the country to achieve five outstanding grades across every area at that time!

    In February 2008 Selby College also became the top-performing General Further Education College in England, with our learners consistently achieving higher grades than other colleges across the country. This year’s students achieved a 98.4% ‘A’ Level pass rate overall, with 49% passing high grades. Students scored a 100% ‘A’ Level pass rate in 17 out of 21 subjects.

  • Learner Support

    At Selby College we want to ensure that you have the opportunity to achieve your true potential, so we’ve developed a specialist team of staff to support you and help you take responsibility for your own learning.

    Guidance and Support Tutors (GSTs)

    You will be allocated a GST who will oversee your progress and attendance at college. This is the first person you should turn to if you have a problem.

    Tutor groups meet weekly and cover a range of topics surrounding career planning, job and university applications and personal development. You will also meet individually with your GST to discuss your progress.

    Student Services

    Fully qualified, highly-skilled staff that are able to offer free impartial advice on everything from career options and financial assistance to transport.

    Please note:

    There are no tuition fees for anyone enrolling on a Full-Time Course between the ages of 16 and 18. Students aged 19+ who begin a Full-Time Course in 2018/19 will be required to pay course fees, details of which can be obtained from Student Services.

    Additional Support

    Selby College is committed to ensuring that all students, including those with disabilities and learning difficulties, are treated fairly so that they are able to make the most of their time at college.

    Our Skills Team (a specialist group of advisors) will work with your Lecturers and GSTs to help you develop the skills you need to successfully complete all parts of your college programme.

    The majority of our classrooms are accessible and we also have designated disabled car parking spaces, ramp access and toilets with access for wheelchairs.

    Counselling

    We realise that sometimes you might want to talk to someone independently and the college Counsellor gives you the opportunity to talk openly about your concerns safe in the knowledge that what you say will remain private.

    All course applications to be sent to Selby College before Friday 15th December 2017 using either the Selby College online course application form (visit selby.ac.uk) or via the UCAS online application.

     

    January 2018

    Student Services text to confirm receipt and we will write to you to offer a conditional place. Please note: conditional places are offered subject to supporting information received. Once you have confirmed your acceptance, you will be invited to a Taster Event on Tuesday 30th January for Vocational/Apprenticeship courses or Wednesday 31st January for A Level courses. You will also be invited to an interview either at your school or at college, where you will talk about your choice of courses over the period January-March 2018. References will also be sought by the college from your school at this time.

    August 2018 – GCSE Results Day

    On the day your GCSE Results are published, the college will attend schools to offer advice to students about their courses. Just look out for the Selby College sign.

    September 2018

    Enrolment

    Before starting your course, you will need to sign up to confirm that you want to take up your place at Selby College.  The process should take no longer than two and a half hours, but remember to bring your GCSE results slips with you.

    Starting College

    You’ll start a day earlier than the current students to give you time to get to know the staff, make new friends and find your way around the campus.  There will also be a Freshers’ Fair for college information, university and employer information, student advice, fun activities, freebies and handouts during your first week here.

  • Activities

    At Selby College we realise that education is more than just studying, it's also about making new friends, the place and the social life. That's why we go to great lengths to combine quality learning and success with a variety of amazing enrichment activities.

    Trips in the UK

    We organise a variety of trips including Alton Towers, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Lightwater Valley, The Clothes Show, London, the theatre, cinema and many more.

    Trips Abroad

    Each year students also take part in a number of trips abroad, these have included visits to Barcelona, Munich, Krakow, Berlin, Torremolinos and Disneyland Paris.

    The Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award Scheme

    This award is available to those students who wish to participate in the Gold Award.

    Selby College Football Development Centre (FDC)

    Selby College Football Development Centre (FDC) gives a platform to those players who have previously been involved with professional clubs, as well as those who have yet to be given the opportunity to showcase their sporting talents. With links to local professional and semi-professional clubs, students will have the opportunity to play at the highest level.

    Training is incorporated into the study programme each week, with teams coached by Level 3 coaches. Additionally, Sports Science support is provided alongside the pitch-based sessions. This includes technical, tactical and strength and conditioning coaching for all players. Massage and rehabilitation is also available to those involved in the FDC.

    The men’s First Team are the current Yorkshire and Humberside champions and represented the area at the National Championships in April. They currently play in the ECFA Category 2 League. Whilst the second team play in the Category 3 League.

    The women’s team play weekly fixtures in the ECFA Yorkshire and Humber league (West League) currently challenging for promotion. The squad are seeking new players to drive the team forward.

    Meet the coaches

    Carla Cantrell

    Carla has played football for Doncaster Belles FC, Leeds Carnegie Ladies FC and Lincoln Ladies FC in the Women’s Super League. She has also represented England at U19, U21 and U23 level.

    Carla began coaching for The Leeds United Foundation whilst studying at University, where she did a degree in Ba (Hons) Physical Education and an MSc in Sport and Exercise Sciences. Whilst at University, Carla was a scholar and captained the Women’s Football team who became British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) champions. Carla also did an internship in Strength and Conditioning at Leeds Beckett University where she worked with sports teams and students from across the University.

    Ed Grady

    Ed’s role at the college is Sports Development Officer and First Team coach, delivering sessions for the men’s sides and overseeing the FDC. After leaving university Ed began a career in coaching with Chelsea FC as well as coordinating and delivering sessions as an assistant Football Development Officer, supporting the East Riding's County Plan. Ed has significant experience of coaching football having worked at Chelsea FC and Academy Level for both Leeds United FC and Hull City FC.

    He is a Level 2 qualified coach and has completed the FA Youth Award Modules 1, 2 & 3.

    Netball

    The netball team train once a week and play in the AoC Yorkshire and Humberside West B League finishing second last season narrowly missing out on promotion. The team are seeking new players to help push for promotion.

    Other teams and clubs are available during lunch and to compete in AoC leagues every Wednesday afternoon. Please contact Ed Grady Sports Development Officer in J116 (Sports Office).

    Students' Union

    Selby College values your opinions. We have an active Students' Union which meets regularly to discuss college issues and represents the student body on a number of committees including the Board of Governors, the Equality and Diversity committee and the Health and Safety committee.

    The Students' Union also arranges a number of events and activities as well as trips. Plus, you can make your voice heard through the Student Council.

    All students can purchase the NUS Extra card, this will give you a wide range of discounts in shops, restaurants, cinema etc. If you're not sure whether your favourite shop offers student discount - just ask!
