A team leader/supervisor is a first line management role, with operational/project responsibilities or responsibility for managing a team to deliver a clearly defined outcome. They provide direction, instructions and guidance to ensure the achievement of set goals. Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of organisation, specific responsibilities will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same whatever the role. Key responsibilities are likely to include supporting, managing and developing team members, managing projects, planning and monitoring workloads and resources, delivering operational plans, resolving problems, and building relationships internally and externally.

Roles/Occupations may include: Supervisor, Team Leader, Project Officer, Shift Supervisor, Foreperson, and Shift Manager.


The qualification standard is comprised of the following elements:

BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Management (QCF)

Functional Skills

English Level 2

Maths Level 2

20% Additional off the job training

Must be at least 20% of the time; is paid and outside the normal day-to-day working duties. It can include: * Theory teaching * Practical training (e.g. shadowing, mentoring, industry visits, attendance at competitions) * Learning support * Writing assignments/assessments * Research

End Point Assessment (Requirement to achieve the Apprenticeship Standard)

How will it be delivered?

Your assessor will regularly meet with you at work to set you targeted work to do through an 'action plan'. They will also give you target dates by which to complete set work and this will enable them to monitor your progress and identify any problems you may be experiencing.

You will also be observed in your workplace carrying out your day to day duties and you will be asked questions to clarify your competence on specific tasks. Your progress will be regularly reviewed and your employer notified if issues and problems occur to enable all parties to assist you in achieving your award.

Entry requirements

The entry requirement for this apprenticeship will be decided by each employer, but may typically be five GCSEs at Grade C or higher.

On completion, apprentices may choose to register as Associate members with the Chartered Management Institute and/or the Institute of Leadership & Management, to support their professional career development and progression.
